Lesson 2 - Food Label Lesson

At times during your career as a Physical Educator you will be asked to teach a Health class , if so I am prepared.

Audience: High School Health Class

Topic: Nutrition and eating Healthy. How to read and understand a food label.

Goal: Students will learn the different kinds of food that are healthy to eat and the kinds that are not. After this lesson they will be more aware on how to read a food label and determine for themselves if it is healthy or not.

Four different resources that will be used for this lesson are the following:

Primary/reference resource – As the teacher I will bring in different food labels from both healthy and non healthy foods. I will first have the students chose (without knowing) what they believe are the healthy and unhealthy labels.

Tools – A search engine is one of the most useful tools and my students will use a search engine to find information on nutrition labels and how to read them. Using a search engine specifically made for health topics will provide easy access in finding information regarding food labels.

Information Resource – students will find tons of information about healthy eating and how to read a food label. The following website breaks down reasons why we use food labels, and how to read them.

Enrichment – At the end of the lessons I will reward my students with a video about what not to eat, and what can happen to you if you eat unhealthy on a daily basis. To make it more interesting I will show them a famous movie called “Super Size Me.” This movie can be purchased at http://www.bestbuy.com/ for only $4.89.

Look up one of your most favorite foods to eat. How many calories does it contain? Please post all answers in the "comments" section.
